If You Don't Want Someone to Know you are Visiting This Site

In General...
If you are in an abusive relationship and viewing this website, it is possible that your abuser may be able to discover that you have been viewing this and other web pages. The best thing that you can do to avoid this is to use a public computer, such as at a trusted friend's house or at a public library. Most computers keep a record of which websites you have visited. If you are using your computer at home and are concerned that your batterer could find out that you visited this website, you may want to empty your history file.

If this is not possible, the following are some basic guidelines for removing your computer's records of your internet usage.

You can find more information on protecting your privacy online at the American Bar Association's Commission on Domestic Violence website.

Removing Evidence from your Computer
Instructions for Internet Explorer:
To delete temporary internet files, cookies and pages listed in your History:

  1. From the menu at the top of your browser window, click on "Tools", and then "Internet Options."
  2. Then when you see the dialog window that opens, click on the "General."
  3. To delete all files and cookies, go to the section labeled "Temporary Internet Files", and click on the "Delete Files." When a confirmation window asks you if you want to delete all files in your temporary internet folder, click "OK".
  4. To delete only specific files, click on the "Settings," and then click on "View Files."
  5. You will see a list of all your temporary internet files and cookies where the computer was on the internet.
  6. You can then highlight the files you would like to erase and hit the delete key on your keyboard.
  7. To empty your "History" folder, click on "Clear History" and then click "OK."
Instructions for Other Web Browsers:
  • Go to your home page or to any other website. Then look at the top file menu bar. This is above the home, back buttons and web address bar at the top of the window. Depending on your computer system, you may see an option called "Preferences" under the Edit menu or you may see an option called "Internet Options" under the Tools menu.
  • If you have the Preferences option, look for a setting called Navigator. Double click on Navigator to expand the choices below it. You should see an option called History. Click on History and you will see some choices on the right side of the dialog box. Click the Clear History button and the Clear Location Bar button. Click the bottom OK button and close the window to quit the program.
  • If your computer uses the Internet Options choice under the Tools menu, you will see two options on the pop-up dialog box called Temporary Internet files and History. Click the Delete Files button under Temporary Internet files and the Clear History button. It may take a few minutes for your computer to delete all of your files. When it is finished, click the OK button and then close your window to quit the program.
  • If you don't see either of these options, look for anything which says history, temporary files, empty cache or clear cache.
